TOM SAAL
The daring adventures and sacrifices of so many in the automobile industry are still told today, thanks to people like Tom Saal. His passion to share their stories and teach others – including children – of the auto obsession makes him an ideal Inductee into the Car Idiots Forever™ Hall of Fame!
Thomas F. Saal is now retired from a lifetime of working in advertising and publishing. His interest in motorsports goes back to attending the Cleveland National Air Races of 1946-1949 and seeing his first auto race in Cleveland Municipal Stadium in 1947.
After being published in Automobile Quarterly and serving as the editor of The Bulb Horn, the magazine of the Veteran Motor Car Club of America, Saal spent a year post-retirement helping Bernie Golias publish Famous But Forgotten: The Story of Alexander Winton, Automotive Pioneer and Industrialist.
After interviewing a retired racing mechanic by the name of Andrew Dunlop, Tom wrote Andy's autobiography, Damn Few Died In Bed. After that, Tom decided to become Tommy and wrote and illustrated Tommy Saal's ABC of Auto Racing History. He’s now working on Tommy Saal's ABC of Drag Racing and Tommy Saal's ABC of Old Cars.
Saal’s other works include Famous Fatal Flights and Famous Racing Women 1903-2019. Tom's most recent book, The Impossible Dream, is dedicated to the late Don Nichols, the constructor of Shadow racing cars, with emphasis on the team's participation in Formula One 1973-1980.
